BEAUFORT, S.C. – The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office arrested a suspect in the attempted burglary  of a pawn shop thanks to a quick response and a video surveillance camera.

Deputies responded to the burglar alarm at the Top Dollar Pawn Shop at Kitties Landing Road in Bluffton just before midnight last night.

As they approached, deputies observed a burgundy SUV leaving the area and notified nearby Bluffton Police officers who conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle.

Deputies then checked the business to determine the cause of the alarm and noted the rear door had been forced open.

Bluffton Police identified the driver and sole occupant of the burgundy SUV as Adam Carfield, 36, of Bluffton, while deputies investigated the break in further.

Management of the shop were notified of the incident and a review of the surveillance video of the pawn shop showed a white man prying open the rear door.

Once he opened the door it appears the audible alarm scared him off and he fled the scene without entering the business or stealing anything.

The subject observed on the surveillance footage was recognizable and determined to be Carfield.

Carfield had been released from the traffic stop so he was contacted by telephone and agreed to meet with deputies and Bluffton officers in the parking lot of Kroger, where he was arrested.

Carfield was charged with second degree burglary. He was taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center.
