SAVANNAH – Shaundra McKeithen announced Thursday that she is running for the Savannah City Council’s 5th District seat currently held by Estella Shabazz.McKeithen said the district needs new leadership and she is prepared to serve and address the public’s needs.“It means you must listen more than speak sometimes,” she said. After walking the neighborhoods and meeting with residents to hear their concerns, McKeithen said she has learned that there is a lot left undone. The poverty rate among African-Americans in the district remains too high, violent crime continues to grow and promised community centers have not come to fruition, McKeithen said. As the district representative, McKeithen pledged to be accessible and responsive to the community’s needs. McKeithen now works as a consultant for nonprofits. Previously, she worked as an administrative assistant for Chatham County’s building and permitting department before being fired during a six-month probationary period for what she claims was retaliation for calling attention to “serious financial deficiencies.”
