County ends police negotiations with city

The Chatham County Board of Commissioners has voted to end police merger negotiations and will begin the process of creating a Chatham County Police Department.

The move comes Friday after a framework agreed upon by the city and county began to unravel when the city demanded more funds from the county to pay higher wages for the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department officers.

The chairman of the board of commissioners as recently as last week had voiced support for the city request, and a panel made up of city and county officials recommended it.

The motion to end negotiations was made by Dean KIcklighter and the vote followed a heated discussion, according to reports from the meeting.

Those voting against continuing the merger talks included Kicklighter, Helen Stone, Lori Brady, Tony Center, and Patrick Farrell.
