chief2Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department Chief Joseph Lumkin said in a press conference held Wednesday that two officers wounded in a traffic stop Tuesday evening were acting as part of the department’s
Anti-Violence Task Force.

But the chief said the incident will not deter the department from continuing its fight against violence in Savannah and Chatham County.
“Despite their injuries, we will not drift from our mission of stopping these senseless shootings in our neighborhoods,” Lumpkin said.
The chief said the two officers were volunteer members of the task force.
“We are always saddened by the loss of life. But violence in our neighborhoods and community is the very thing the brave men and women who volunteer for this task force are trying to prevent and deter,” the  chief said
“They volunteered to work long hours beyond their regular work week. Working overnight hours and weekends to try to reduce the number of shootings and homicides which are creating fear in our community,” he said.
