statuePARRIS ISLAND – A piece of history is getting a major renovation. The Iwo Jima Monument at Parris Island that was dedicated 63 years ago this week needs a little help. A recent inspection, while not deemed critical, revealed a considerable amount of corrosion in the lower sections, particularly the legs, and less observable corrosion in the upper sections of the sculpture. According to Capt. Gregory H. Carroll, Public Affairs Director and Centennial Officer for Parris Island, a visual and hands-on inspection of the memorial was performed July 22-24, 2013. A second visit was made on Aug. 19 to remove additional samples for petrographic examination. The existing condition of the monument was recorded overall and in detail through photographs.
