1ikeaIKEA, the mega-popular home furnishing store known for its flat-packed furniture and other Scandinavian-design goods, is proposing to open a 294,000-square-foot store that would hire about 250 workers in Jacksonville. “We’re expanding our Southeastern presence to the key metropolitan area of North Florida,” said IKEA Public Relations Manager Joseph Roth at a packed news conference Wednesday morning at the JAX Chamber headquarters in downtown Jacksonville. Roth said the home furnishings company based in Sweden pursued the site that is proposed to be developed on 25 acres of land a the northwest corner of Gate Parkway and Interstate 295. IKEA officials see the Jacksonville site as a potential regional draw of customers from as far as South Georgia to well inland, possibly as far away as Tallahassee.
