A judge on Tuesday ruled that prosecutors had sufficiently charged a contract nurse and former deputy sheriff in the death of Mathew Ajibade at the Chatham County jail. In a 10-page order, Chatham County Superior Court Judge James F. Bass Jr. denied a challenge against the indictment that charges Gregory Brown with involuntary manslaughter. His attorney had argued it was “based on wholly illegal evidence.” Bass ruled that if the language in the indictment “is taken as true, defendant Brown would be guilty of involuntary manslaughter. ”The judge also rejected arguments for Brown and former deputy sheriff Maxine Evans that the indictment did not sufficiently appraise the defense of the offenses that were charged.
