joseph lumpkinSavannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Chief Joseph Lumpkin has responded in no uncertain terms to mounting rumors that he plans to resign as chief after the upcoming city election.

“The rumors that have been circulating for over a month that I am leaving the SCMPD are completely false,” Lumpkin said in a response to concerns raised by Mark Dana, the president of the Savannah Tourism Leadership Council.

Dana told SCMPD Community Relations Administrator Michelle Gavin that several Savannah business leaders were telling him of the chief’s plan to leave the city.

“Unfortunately the rumors of you leaving SCMPD after the election have not died down,” Gavin said in an email to Lumpkin.

“Mark Dana just called me because several business leaders are telling him that you are leaving. It may be worthwhile to send the Chief’s Business Advisory Council an e-mail to reassure them that you are not leaving.”
