wrong carThree men are in custody after they threw down on the wrong car and the Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team (CNT) agents inside the car did not take it so well.

Agents were stopped at a traffic light in an unmarked vehicle when another vehicle pulled alongside them.  The occupants in the other vehicle began making threatening statements and signaling to the agents.  There also appeared to be a handgun inside the vehicle.  The agents followed the vehicle as a traffic stop was attempted by marked police vehicles but they fled.

Four days later CNT agents observed the same vehicle driving in the same general area of West Savannah.  The occupants appeared to be the men from the original incident.  After following the vehicle until it stopped, agents detained the three occupants and located a firearm.  A search warrant for the vehicle was then obtained and resulted in the seizure of an altered shotgun.

21-year-old Willie Jackson of Garden City, 21-year-old Johnard Powell and 36-year-old Phabian Powell, both of Savannah, were arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.  Jackson was on active probation and had five outstanding arrest warrants through the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office at the time of his arrest.  Johnard Powell was also on probation and has at least one prior conviction for armed robbery and hijacking a motor vehicle.

Evidence suggested the three men were the same people involved in the first incident.

All three remain in the Chatham County Detention Center following their arraignments in the Recorder’s Court of Chatham County.
