gunTYBEE ISLAND – Tybee Island police recently responded to a report of a disorderly man with a pit bull, only to find the pit bull was actually a pistol and the man was inebriated.

The arrest played out near the sandbar on Butler Street.

Pedro Moreno

Pedro Moreno ignored police commands to keep his hand out of his pockets, where they later learned he had a knife, and told them he had thrown the gun into the river “because I know I was doing wrong.”

But during the investigation one of the officers found a loaded pistol hidden atop of a tire of a nearby vehicle, and although Moreno would not answer when asked if it belonged to him, officers suspected it was his because he was wearing an empty holster on his hip.

During a search of the suspect’s pockets officers also found a spare clip loaded with 14 9mm bullets and the knife he appeared to be reaching for during questioning.

Moreno also told police he was afraid because he is a Mexican National.

He was transported to the Tybee Island Jail and charged with reckless conduct public intoxication, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon before being transported to the Chatham County Detention Center where he was “released pending bond.”
