Violent crimes task force makes 19 felony arrests

scmpd-badgeThe crime fighting operation in which two police officers were shot and a suspect killed made 19 felony and 34 misdemeanor arrests during a six-day period ending Saturday.

The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Violent Crimes Task Force focused on local crime prevention through removal of violent offenders, drugs and illegal weapons.

Officers Ruben Colon and Michael Gonzales were shot and taken to hospital after an stop made Friday a part of the operation, but their wounds were not life threatening, officials say. They were fired upon and returned gunfire, fatally shooting Tyrie Cuyler, 25, according to police reports.

The operation resulted in the following felony arrests:

4 – possession of a firearm by a convicted felon

4 – felony warrants

1 – altered serial number on a firearm

1 – possession of marijuana with intent to distribute

1 – possession of a firearm by 1st offender

2 – possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime

1 – possession of cocaine with intent to distribute

1 – criminal attempt (rape)

1 – possession of cocaine

1 – fleeing to elude

1 – theft by taking (auto)

1 – possession of dangerous drugs (prescription)

The deployment also netted 34 misdemeanor arrests, 104 traffic citations, 48 field interviews, and 11 firearm seizures, two of which were stolen.
